In a quiet valley wrapped in shadow lies a woodland few dare to enter. For generations, villagers have spoken in hushed tones of the fog that rises each dusk, curling out from the trees like a living breath. It carries with it old lullabies no one remembers learning and glimpses of a world not quite this one. Some call it a spirit. Others, a blessing. But most know it as a curse.

The truth is older, stranger. The fog is the dreaming mind of a forgotten god, a spirit of sorrow and nature, once benevolent, now warped by centuries of longing. It dreams restlessly, reaching from beneath root and soil, seeking to wake.

Long ago, a saint’s bones were buried in the heart of the forest, within the ruins of a church long lost to moss and time. This unintentional burial shackled the spirit, binding it in place. But the bond is fraying. Now the fog stirs with intent. It whispers to wanderers, calling them by name, luring them deeper. Within its reach, the forest gives birth to things from nightmare and folklore, twisted echoes of grief and memory, each drawn toward one purpose: the destruction of the bones.

Those who fall under the spirit’s influence, hags, corrupted clergy, and dream-poisoned beasts, work to release it. If they succeed, if the bones are unearthed and destroyed, the spirit will awaken fully. The forest will no longer dream, it will rise. And with it, Baalsurik, He Who Watches the Herd, the true form of the ancient god, will walk once more. A being of crown and antler, sorrow and fury. He will bring the fog with him, spreading it across the world like a veil pulled tight over the eyes of the living.

The Gloamwood takes what it is owed: children, memories, even time itself. Now, the fog has a new song, and it knows your name. Venture into the dreaming forest, where every step could be your last..

Witchfell - Gloamwood Whispers is a Fifth Edition horror fantasy adventure for four to six adventurers with an average party level of 2. Due to the nature of this adventure, characters with strong Wisdom saving throws and abilities that detect or resist charm, illusion, or possession effects will have an advantage. This adventure can be played multiple times, with different outcomes and challenges each time. It is not a typical “kick down the door” style adventure, it is horror themed and deadly, requiring players to think creatively and take alternative approaches in order to survive.
