Settlers have long been steadily arriving at the Great Forest, establishing villages and farmsteads. Initially, tensions between the many tribes native to the Great Forest of Varshlan and the settlers were high. But as time passed, most tribes came to accept the newcomers grudgingly, and some even started trading with them. Most, but not all. Tribes whose hunting grounds were taken over by settlers’ farming lands began calling for unity against what they saw as a common enemy. For a time, their calls were left unanswered.

Among those who were eager to fight were the twin priestesses of Koth, a demonic deity of the hunt and bloodshed. The priestesses saw the settlers as an ideal way to unite the tribes in worshipping their demonic deity. Traveling and preaching to each tribe, they promised great power to all who would fight the newcomers in the name of Koth and shame and destruction to those who would abstain.

After barbaric tribes attack several farmsteads and villages on the edge of the Great Forest of Varshlan, the party is called upon to brave the wilderness and uncover the cause that sparked these unprecedented hostilities, starting at the refugee rallying point of the old and previously almost abandoned Fort Beathris. The disappearance of an entire settlement leads the party to seek the Beaver Clan - a barbarian tribe with whom trade and friendly relations had long ago been established.
