For centuries, the remote shores of Zangor–on a continent known as the Old World–have lured bold explorers with promises of untold riches.
Many generations ago, a group of explorers called the Wayfarers discovered Lem Ashlan, a sacred site of the Brakka, an ape-like tribal people. The city glittered with golden idols, ebony monoliths, and ivory towers. Armed with steel and spellcraft, the Wayfarers overwhelmed the less advanced Brakka and ruled as emperor-gods until Brakkan shamans rebelled. Through the sounding of the Drum of Ashlan, they awakened Khazrai, a colossal ape whose fury destroyed the Wayfarers and left Lem Ashlan in ruins.
In the years that followed, the Wayfarer-imported knowledge and greed fueled wars among the tribes. Peace came only when the leader of the shamans used the magical staff of a Wayfarer wizard named Scoros to conceal Lem Ashlan and declared it the Forbidden City, barred to all. The secret to breaking the spell remained hidden in the wizard’s journal which found its way back to the civilized lands.
A few months ago, a Skytholean expedition made contact with the Brakka, stunned to find them wielding steel and speaking the common tongue. As the explorers delved deeper into the jungle, rumors of the Wayfarers' return spread quickly amongst the native tribes. The warlord Numa started recruiting warriors with the pretense of protecting the Forbidden City from the foreigners, while in reality he seeks to seize its riches. At the same time, shaman Dalhi sought once more to call the Khazrai to defend Lem Ashlan from falling into the wrong hands.
Before the Skytholeans could understand the tensions building around them, they were attacked by Brakka warriors who felt threatened by their presence. One of the survivors escaped, carrying tales of a strange and dangerous land. Another, the bard Sarlan, remained stranded in Zangor—where he found love.
The characters arrive in Zangor with the ancient Wayfarer journal and a mission to find Lem Ashlan, as Numa seeks a way into the city and Dalhi prepares to sound the Drum of Ashlan, to awaken Khazrai once more.
