Thousands of years ago, when the drifting heavens were still young, an ancient battle was fought in the far northern reaches of the world. Aberrant creatures of unknown origin started attacking the frozen regions of the Drifting Heavens, leaving devastation in their wake.
The patron deity of one of those regions, a god whose name is now long forgotten, had been warned by the Winter Queen, who had ventured into this alien plane and returned half-mad. In response, he sent his avatar to aid Sigurd, a local hero, and to seal the rift while the Winter Queen focused on guarding its other entrance.
The forces led by the avatar and the hero fought back the horde. In the final moments of the battle, the avatar was mortally wounded. With his last strength, he plunged his sword into the ice, sealing the rift. The hero, however, was trapped on the other side, left behind to hold back the abominations.
The energy required to seal the rift, combined with the avatar’s death, destroyed the god outright. Over the years, modern scholars hypothesize that Boreas, one of the northern gods, was born from the lingering essence of that old god.
Over time, survivors from the original forces that defended against the otherworldly invasion and local barbarian tribes built a tomb shrine around the avatar’s remains, honoring both the hero and the god. Offerings of gratitude were left for generations. Alas, as centuries passed, the tomb was forgotten. A glacier formed around it, and it was lost to time.
Recently, an earthquake cracked the glacier, and the energies sealing the rift weakened. At that moment, the twisted, deranged hero managed to pierce the veil between the planes and emerge back into the Drifting Heavens.
